DM Note: Cure Minor only restores 1 point, normally bare minimum to end bleeding out. But Meepo only has 2 hit points so for him it was kind of a big thing! |
Both Ruby and Borax grabbed bandages and tried to patch the little kobold up, but their first-aid skills were rudimentary to say the least and he was gasping his last by the time Calvis flipped a copper and used a Cure Minor Wounds to pull him back from the brink.
That done, they looked at the northern door, which like many in this region was heavilly gnawed at the bottom, leaving gaps plenty big enough for the rats whose tracks and droppings were clearly visible.

29. On the other side was another square room. The cobblestone floor contained two trapdoors blocked open by iron spikes. It was obvious that if the tops of the trapdoors had been flush with the floor, they would have been be difficult to spot. Mounted on the north wall was a dry fountain carved with the bas-relief of a dragon.
It seemed pretty likely that the Hucrele party had done this, so it looked like they were on the right track.
The fountain looked very similar to the one in an earlier room, but something made them just a little cautious, and Calvis pointed out there were pipes leading from the dragon's mouth to a rusted metal cylinder further down. Meepo had translated the inscription on this one - Let there be Death - without saying the word, and the party retreated to the door before he squeaked "Naihuine!". A cloud of grey vapour poured out of the fountain and enveloped the area directly in front of it before dispersing. All were pretty sure they had avoided a painful result. A subsequent pronouncement produced no gas, though they could hear the mechanism cycling.
Borax had a thought, and hurried back to the room with the first fountain (26). He repeated the command word there in hopes that a new day might mean a new potion, but to no result.
Moving on, they carefully opened the west door to the next room. Borax spiked it open, just in case, and then they moved in. Despite being wounded, Calvis was holding his last spell of the day in case of different need.

30. The stench of rotting meat suffuses the air, rising from much-chewed carcasses of several cave rats, smaller vermin, and some suspiciously humanoid-looking bodies. The cadavers lie upon a floor of filth, old bones, hair, and fur that combine to make a particularly large and vile nest.
As they began to investigate there was a rush and a wave of disgusting rats burst from the nest, diving at the party with their fangs bared. Behind them came a monstrosity, a huge, bloated female rat, presumably the matriach of this colony.
"Calvis! Heal yourself," yelled Borax, "Meepo - to me!" and then battle was joined. Borax dragged the kobold behind him, and set his shield, but to no avail; once more poor Meepo went down under a furry wave of claws and teeth. Ruby whirled her sword, slashing left and right and scattering bloodied furry bodies from her path as Borax flattened one with his hammer and tried to angle himself to avoid being surrounded.

Calvis, once more, was suffering from his rat jinx, and his rapier jabbed futilely at them as Ruby and Borax cut through the pack. Then he quailed as the huge form of Guthash, the Bloated One, loomed up over him, jaws gnashing.
The last 'normal' rat fled, taking a wound from Borax as it fled, and burrowed into the nest. Ruby noted that the noises carried on well beyond where the wall had to be. Borax' dwarvish feel for subterranean spaces suggested that the north wall was the outer edge of the Citadel.
DM Note: Nice critical there! |
Calvis dodged frantically, slashing with his slender blade as Ruby joined him, but the monster was too quick for him. Then Borax charged in from behind, struck with his hammer, and smashed her skull in one strike.
Gasping, Calvis picked up Meepo and once more staunched his bleeding, while Borax guarded the door and Ruby searched the noisome nest. The sad corpses of the small and weak kobolds and goblins the rats had managed to waylay yielded some valuables, but the major find was the tattered body of a ranger. A gold ring on his hand had his name, Karakas, scribed on it. The Hucrele party had got this far, and lost one of their number to the rats.
The party withdrew to their last resting point and forted up for another rest, during which Borax cut down Karakas' studded leather for Meepo and handed him the ranger's shortbow and last six arrows. Meepo was overwhelmed by such riches.
The next day, Calvis looked a bit peaky. The others asked him if he was OK to continue, and he assured them that he was; it did look like a bit of an effort, however.
After unpinning some doors, the party opened the northern door from room 25 [which the DM had forgotten to sketch on the previous week, ahem].

31. The 10-foot-wide hall beyond was liberally strewn with sharp caltrops. The northern door was missing, but the room beyond was partially blocked by a roughly mortared 3-foot-high wall, complete with crenellations.
The rough wall looked like a shooting point, so Borax ripped the south door off its' hinges and stood it sideways across the doorway to make a barricade. Meepo, feeling safer in his new armour, accepted the task of walking slowly up one side of the room scooping up the caltrops while the others covered him from the doorway.
As he approached the redoubt, the sound of hurrying feet could be heard and four goblins popped up from behind the wall, javelins ready to throw. A brief and savage exchange of missiles ensued, with Meepo huddled right under the wall out of sight. The four goblins were downed, and Ruby sprinted up the cleared side and vaulted the wall, landing in what looked much like a guard-room. Meepo scrambled over, followed by Borax and Calvis, and they turned to face the door outwards - as it burst open to reveal another group of goblins.

Meepo tucked in behind Borax and started shooting arrows from his new bow, cackling with delight. The little kobold was physically weak but quite deft, and he wasn't a bad shot.
Ruby and Borax engaged the goblins in the doorway, hampered by the javelins arcing over the fight at them from the ones behind. One hit Borax quite badly, and Calvis felt it the right moment to cast the Blessing of Lynien on the party. Slowly, Borax and Ruby cut their way forward, supported by missiles from behind even though Meepo and Calvis found targets difficult to pick in the fight.
Finally, the last goblin broke and fled, getting nearly to the turn in the corridor before Borax cut him down.
